Final Major Project - Fictional band - Define: Unit 12/13

Final Major Project - Fictional Band: Define Based on my previous discovery phase, I can now clarify what the direction of my project will be. For my FMP, I will create a fictional band supported by a promotional campaign advertising their debut single and show. This band's message will directly link back to the themes of democracy, protest, and empowerment. This will be evident in the visual language used to represent them in contrast to the visual language used to represent the power they oppose. Regarding outcomes, I will create a series of outcomes each representing an aspect of the band. My primary outcome will be a series of character designs to represent the members of the fictional band. Following this, I will create various promotional materials and assets to support those designs. These will possibly include: poster designs, single artwork (produced on a record/CD sleeve), a visualiser single video release,  physical promotional materials ( e.g. T shirt prints, tote bag ...

Final Major Project - Fictional band - Discover: Unit 12/13

Final Major Project - Fictional band: Discover For my FMP I have decided to create a fictional band that respond to the theme of Democracy, Protest and Empowerment. This will be achieved through synergy between the band's visual elements and assets, their music, and the message they represent. In the Discovery phase of my work, I studied a variety of sources to inform my later production of visual assets for the fictional band. I began by creating an ideation mood-board collecting my thoughts with visual representations from other artists. This included the work of  Taiyo Matsumoto, the fictional bands 'Peach Riot', 'Gorillaz', and 'Sex Bob-Omb', concept art from the SEGA title 'Jet Set Radio', and album art for the band 'Mass of the Fermenting Dregs'. Furthering this initial ideation stage, I attended a Mass of the Fermenting Dregs concert at EartH Theatre, London. While attending this show, I paid close attention to the stage layout, ligh...

Industry - Design Development: Unit 8

Industry - "Plastic Beach" For this unit I was required to create a typographical response to a quote with relevance to environmental impact. I chose to explore the work of the band Gorillaz, in particular their album Plastic Beach - as it directly links to the theme of environmental damage by human negligence. By the end of this project I had a total of 2 outcomes, one being a digitally animated quote and the other being a physical poster incorporating a variety of relevant materials to portray the meaning of the quote, alongside a typographic image of the quote. I feel these outcomes were fairly successful in relation to the brief, as both used my understanding of colour, shape language, and experimentation with forms to portray a message relevant to the brief and representative of each chosen quote. In particular, I believe my second outcome was successful due to my experimentation with materials I wouldn't normally use. I decided to laser cut a piece of acrylic plast...

LAUNCH! - Design Development: Unit 8

LAUNCH! - "Screw Loose" 'SCREW LOOSE' complete expo For this project, as a group we created a brand (titled: 'Screw Loose') and hosted an expo to display the brand's intentions (to highlight and argue against the stigmas and misconceptions surrounding mental health/behavioural conditions such as OCD, ADHD, and Anxiety) In producing and displaying the final expo, the overall outcome was relatively successful . However, this process was not without its challenges and difficulties.     close up of separate assets Throughout the entire task we found it difficult to stay on track with one another’s work pace – frequently we had to reconvene to consider how far we were in the project, remind ing ourselves/each other of the desired outcomes and the brand identity so as we all maintained cohesion across our own additions to the expo.   Within this process, I and another member of our group discovered we were very much carrying the process without too much as...

Speaking and Listening: Unit 6

Speaking and Listening: Unit 6 - For this unit, I created a draft portfolio and presented to the rest of our group. I then received feedback from the class based on this presentation. Portfolio In regards to my portfolio, I feel it is successful in depicting my main discipline of illustration - all imagery included links back in some way to illustrative artworks, from digital illustrations to print typography. I believe the layout is simple but effective, clearly showing both my best work and my growth as an illustration practitioner. However, based on feedback I received, I could give my work more space - allowing the viewer to spend more time taking in specific pieces rather than immediately moving on to the next project. Regarding the format, I believe my use of a PDF file for my portfolio makes for an easily accessible format. I do think it would be beneficial for me to also have a website of all of my work and progress, and then provide a link in my portfolio to this website ...

The Design Process - Week 3: Deliver - Part 2

The Design Process: Deliver - Part 2 I feel that, during this project, I have adopted clear idea of the design process and its benefits to creating both individual pieces and an entire body of work. By discovering a variety of research sources, own personal skills, and individual interests in a specific field - the creative is able to clearly ideate a series of possible solutions to a brief. From these ideas, they can then define how exactly they plan on responding to this brief - bringing their ideas together into one solid direction. In doing so, they then go on to develop this one idea by creating multiple iterations of the same proposition. Dependant on the nature of the project, these iterations may be informed purely by creative choices or also by the choices of an employer/client of the piece. To conclude this process, once a final design has been decided upon, the creative will then deliver the final piece by refining the desired design into one complete and succinct piece...

The Design Process - Week 3: Deliver - Part 1

The Design Process: Deliver - Part 1 Coming to the conclusion of this project, I began directly illustrating my final outcome. As a starting point, I sketched out a brief mind map to develop ideas for what parts of Crossness I could visually incorporate into a character design. This ranged from the general colour palette, to individual motifs and structures being designated to a specific body part. Primary sketches Following on from this, I began to create some primary iterations through quick sketches - putting to use my newly discovered knowledge of shape language, and directly observing from my photos of Crossness to ensure I was accurately and thoroughly depicting the setting in my design choices. My first two iterations were bulky, square-bodied robot-like figures. As much as these accurately incorporated both the shape language (large engines) and structures (cogs and gears) of Crossness, I personally felt their designed appeared too unrefined to visually represent the intricate ...
